i Format Forum is an organization supporting “i Format,” an innovative systematized server technology, capable of compressing data and providing the newest information on addresses, stores, roads and local facilities that change on a daily basis. Today, we propose the advanced version format “incremental update format.”

In recent years, communication networks such as wireless LAN and wave broadcasts have made rapid improvements in speed and capacity. These improvements have brought a huge advancement in memory platforms and size enlarged hard discs.

In order to actualize more advanced and useful navigation services, we as i Format Forum, are to develop an “incremental update format” and introduce the specifications for standardization of this format.

[What does incremental update format mean?]

It is a format that enables the delivery of only the updated item and location information, as opposed to the whole updated map, and can be provided on various memory platforms, including through telematics.

These features make it easy and more quickly to access and utilize the latest location information.

What the incremental update format can do for the future in navigation systems

Without incremental update format

Method 1

Bring the user’s navi hard disc to the car dealership.

Once updated, the hard disc is returned to the user, and reinstalled into the navi system.

Method 2

The user removes the navi hard disc and connect it directly to a computer. Once connected, the user must dedicate several hours to download the map updates.

Method 3

The user purchases a DVD loaded with the updated map, then loads it onto their navi system.

Using the incremental update format enables the following;

Using the broadcast waves and wireless LAN, once your navigation system is started, the parts that have been updated will be automatically displayed on your navi system.

Newly made roads, newly opened shops, etc. are already in your navigation system on time.

Automatic update can be made while driving. Data updates take no time at all, meaning you can enjoy driving without worry.
